Self-Archiving Policy
Author Sharing & Repository Deposit
The Journal of Precision Medicine and Health Research (JPMHR) supports author self-archiving and permits authors to deposit eligible manuscript versions in appropriate repositories and scholarly platforms without a routine embargo.
Authors may share the submitted manuscript, accepted manuscript, and published Version of Record in accordance with the applicable CC BY 4.0 licence, third-party rights, confidentiality requirements, and the conditions described in this policy.
Purpose and Scope
This policy explains how authors may lawfully share and archive versions of work submitted to or published by JPMHR.
View purpose and scope
Self-archiving supports:
- open access;
- research dissemination;
- institutional compliance;
- funder requirements;
- scholarly discoverability;
- long-term accessibility;
- author visibility; and
- distributed preservation of scholarly work.
This policy applies to manuscript versions created before, during, and after the JPMHR publication process.
Manuscript Versions
JPMHR distinguishes the submitted manuscript, accepted manuscript, and Version of Record.
View manuscript-version definitions
Submitted Manuscript / Preprint
The version prepared by the authors before formal peer review by JPMHR.
Accepted Manuscript
The author-created version incorporating revisions following peer review and formally accepted for publication, but before final journal copyediting, typesetting, pagination, and production formatting.
Version of Record
The final published JPMHR version carrying the formal publication metadata, citation information, DOI where assigned, journal formatting, and applicable licence statement.
Preprints and Submitted Manuscripts
JPMHR permits authors to share a pre-peer-review version of their work, subject to disclosure of prior dissemination.
View preprint permissions
Authors may deposit or post the submitted manuscript on:
- recognised preprint servers;
- institutional repositories;
- subject repositories;
- personal academic webpages;
- funder repositories; or
- other legitimate scholarly platforms.
Preprint posting should be disclosed to JPMHR at submission where applicable.
Authors should not present a preprint as if it has already undergone JPMHR peer review or has been formally accepted by the journal.
Once the Version of Record is published, authors are encouraged to update the preprint record with the formal citation and DOI or permanent JPMHR article URL.
Accepted Manuscript
Authors may deposit the accepted manuscript without a routine embargo.
View accepted-manuscript permissions
The accepted manuscript may be deposited in:
- institutional repositories;
- disciplinary repositories;
- funder repositories;
- national repositories;
- author websites; and
- other appropriate non-deceptive scholarly locations.
Once the Version of Record has been published, the repository record should, where practical, include:
- the final article citation;
- the DOI;
- the permanent JPMHR article link;
- a statement that the deposited file is the accepted manuscript; and
- a link to the Version of Record.
Published Version of Record
JPMHR permits authors to share and archive the published Version of Record under the journal's CC BY 4.0 licensing framework.
View Version-of-Record sharing permissions
Authors may deposit or share the Version of Record through:
- institutional repositories;
- subject repositories;
- funder repositories;
- personal or departmental webpages;
- professional academic profiles;
- educational platforms; and
- other lawful scholarly channels.
The published file should retain its citation, copyright, licence, DOI, and journal-identification information.
Third-party material excluded from CC BY 4.0 remains subject to its separate rights restrictions.
Embargo Period
JPMHR does not impose a routine embargo on author self-archiving.
View embargo policy
Authors do not ordinarily need to wait a prescribed number of months after publication before depositing an eligible manuscript version.
This applies to the submitted version, accepted manuscript, and Version of Record subject to:
- the applicable licence;
- third-party copyright;
- participant confidentiality;
- contractual restrictions;
- repository requirements; and
- other legitimate legal or ethical obligations.
Permitted Archiving Locations
JPMHR does not restrict self-archiving to a single repository type.
View permitted locations
Appropriate locations may include:
- institutional repositories;
- disciplinary repositories;
- government repositories;
- national research repositories;
- funder repositories;
- university or departmental webpages;
- personal academic webpages;
- recognised preprint platforms;
- professional scholarly profiles; and
- other lawful academic or research-sharing services.
Authors should consider repository stability, provenance, preservation, version identification, and access conditions when selecting a location.
Citation and Linking to the Version of Record
Repository and shared copies should direct readers to the formally published Version of Record whenever available.
View linking requirements
Once the article is published, archived copies should, where practical, provide:
- the complete citation;
- the article DOI;
- the permanent JPMHR article URL;
- the publication year;
- the journal title; and
- the version status of the deposited file.
Linking to the Version of Record improves citation accuracy and helps readers identify later corrections or retraction notices.
Version Labelling
Deposited files should be labelled accurately so readers can distinguish preprints, accepted manuscripts, and final published articles.
View version-labelling guidance
Appropriate labels may include:
- Preprint / Submitted Manuscript — not peer reviewed by JPMHR;
- Accepted Manuscript — peer reviewed and accepted, but not the final journal-formatted version;
- Version of Record — formally published by JPMHR.
Authors should not reproduce journal branding or formatting on a preprint in a manner that makes it appear to be the official JPMHR Version of Record.
Licensing of Archived Copies
Published JPMHR articles are licensed under CC BY 4.0, subject to clearly identified third-party exceptions.
View licensing principles
For the Version of Record, authors should preserve the journal's published:
- copyright statement;
- CC BY 4.0 notice;
- licence URL;
- citation information; and
- third-party rights notices.
Earlier manuscript versions should not be given a misleading licence statement that overrides rights owned by a third party.
Third-Party Material in Archived Copies
Self-archiving permission from JPMHR does not override separate rights in third-party material.
View third-party material requirements
Separate restrictions may apply to:
- photographs;
- figures;
- tables;
- maps;
- measurement instruments;
- questionnaires;
- commercial images;
- substantial quotations;
- proprietary software outputs; or
- other protected third-party material.
Where a repository copy includes such material, authors remain responsible for complying with the relevant licence or permission.
Confidential and Sensitive Material
Authors must not use self-archiving to disclose information that cannot lawfully or ethically be made public.
View confidentiality safeguards
Repository deposit must respect:
- participant confidentiality;
- patient privacy;
- consent restrictions;
- ethical approval conditions;
- restricted datasets;
- commercial confidentiality;
- national or institutional requirements; and
- other lawful restrictions.
Material that was removed from the published article for legitimate confidentiality or legal reasons must not be restored through an author repository copy without appropriate authority.
Funder and Institutional Repository Requirements
Authors may deposit their work to comply with legitimate funder or institutional open-access requirements.
View funder and institutional considerations
Authors remain responsible for checking requirements relating to:
- repository type;
- deposit timing;
- version required;
- licensing;
- metadata;
- rights-retention language;
- grant acknowledgements; or
- other funder conditions.
JPMHR's no-routine-embargo policy is intended to facilitate repository compliance rather than restrict it.
Data, Code and Supplementary Research Outputs
Self-archiving of an article is distinct from sharing research datasets, source code, software, and other research objects.
View research-output sharing principles
Authors are encouraged to deposit eligible research outputs in suitable repositories where this is ethically and legally appropriate.
Separate repository licences and access conditions may apply to:
- datasets;
- statistical code;
- software;
- analysis scripts;
- protocols;
- model files;
- data dictionaries;
- instruments; and
- supplementary research materials.
Commercial and Academic Sharing Platforms
Authors may share eligible JPMHR content on lawful commercial or non-commercial scholarly platforms where the applicable licence and rights permit it.
View platform-sharing principles
Authors should review the terms of any third-party platform before uploading their work.
Platform terms should not require authors to:
- claim ownership they do not possess;
- grant rights inconsistent with third-party material;
- misrepresent a manuscript version;
- remove the CC BY 4.0 notice from the Version of Record; or
- present a non-final manuscript as the official published version.
Corrections, Retractions and Archived Copies
Authors should make reasonable efforts to ensure that repository copies do not conceal a material change in the status of the Version of Record.
View post-publication status requirements
If the JPMHR article is later:
- corrected;
- subject to an Expression of Concern;
- retracted; or
- otherwise formally updated,
authors are encouraged to update repository records, where technically possible, so users can identify the current publication status.
A retracted article should not continue to be circulated by an author in a manner that falsely implies that the retraction does not exist.
JPMHR Responsibilities
JPMHR supports legitimate author self-archiving and does not require removal of repository copies merely because they are freely accessible.
View journal responsibilities
JPMHR may request correction or removal of a repository copy only where there is a legitimate reason, such as:
- serious copyright infringement;
- publication of confidential material;
- misrepresentation of article status;
- fraudulent journal branding;
- failure to reflect a legally required removal;
- material breach of third-party rights; or
- another substantial ethical or legal concern.
JPMHR will not ordinarily demand removal simply because the archived copy may reduce traffic to the journal website.
Self-Archiving and Digital Preservation
Distributed author archiving contributes to continuity of access but does not replace formal journal preservation arrangements.
View preservation relationship
Repository copies can help ensure that scholarly material remains discoverable if a journal website is temporarily unavailable.
However, self-archiving should not be represented as equivalent to a verified independent digital-preservation network.
Relationship with Open Access, Licensing and Copyright
JPMHR's self-archiving policy forms part of its wider open-access and author-rights framework.
View how the policies work together
- Open Access Policy: published articles are immediately free to read.
- Licensing Policy: CC BY 4.0 permits broad lawful reuse.
- Copyright Policy: authors retain copyright.
- Self-Archiving Policy: authors may deposit and share eligible manuscript versions without a routine embargo.
