Copyright Policy
Copyright & Author Rights
Authors publishing in the Journal of Precision Medicine and Health Research (JPMHR) retain copyright in their scholarly work. JPMHR does not require routine transfer of copyright ownership to the journal or publisher as a condition of publication.
Authors grant JPMHR the non-exclusive rights reasonably necessary to publish, disseminate, preserve, index, and maintain the Version of Record. Published articles are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence (CC BY 4.0).
Copyright Ownership
Copyright in articles published by JPMHR remains with the author or authors unless a different lawful rights holder is explicitly identified.
View copyright ownership details
JPMHR does not ordinarily require authors to assign or transfer ownership of copyright to BMU Ventures (Private) Limited or to the journal.
Where an author's employer, institution, government body, funder, or another entity lawfully owns copyright in a particular work, the relevant ownership position should be accurately disclosed before publication.
Copyright ownership is distinct from the open licence applied to the publication. The copyright holder retains ownership while CC BY 4.0 grants broad reuse rights to the public.
Rights Granted to JPMHR
Authors grant JPMHR non-exclusive rights necessary to publish and maintain the article as part of the permanent scholarly record.
View journal publication rights
These rights may include authority to:
- publish the accepted article as the Version of Record;
- host and distribute the article online;
- reproduce the article in journal publication formats;
- prepare and distribute bibliographic metadata;
- register and maintain DOI metadata;
- provide metadata to indexing, abstracting, discovery, and repository services;
- deposit the article with verified preservation services where operational;
- maintain archival and backup copies;
- implement corrections, retractions, and other formal scholarly-record notices; and
- take reasonable technical steps required to ensure continuing access to the publication.
These rights are non-exclusive. Authors remain free to exercise their own copyright and to reuse their work consistently with the applicable licence and any third-party rights.
Creative Commons Licence
JPMHR publishes scholarly articles under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).
View licence and copyright relationship
CC BY 4.0 permits users to:
- copy and redistribute licensed content;
- share articles in any medium or format;
- adapt, remix, transform, and build upon the work;
- translate published content;
- reuse material in educational or professional contexts;
- conduct text and data mining; and
- make commercial as well as non-commercial use of licensed material.
Users must provide appropriate attribution, identify the licence, and indicate changes where applicable.
The licence does not transfer copyright ownership from the authors to the public. It grants permissions for reuse while the authors remain the copyright holders.
Copyright and Manuscript Versions
Authors retain rights in manuscript versions created during the publication process and may share them in accordance with JPMHR's self-archiving framework.
View manuscript-version rights
Submitted Version / Preprint
Authors may retain and share the manuscript version existing before formal peer review, subject to disclosure requirements concerning preprints and prior dissemination.
Accepted Manuscript
Authors may retain and archive the peer-reviewed manuscript accepted for publication before final journal formatting and production.
Version of Record
Authors may also share the formally published Version of Record in accordance with the journal's CC BY 4.0 licence and Self-Archiving Policy.
Once the Version of Record is available, earlier versions should, where practical, include a citation and link directing readers to the final published article.
Third-Party Copyright
Authors must ensure that third-party material included in a submission is lawfully reusable and accurately identified.
View third-party copyright requirements
Third-party copyrighted material may include:
- figures;
- tables;
- photographs;
- medical or clinical images;
- maps;
- questionnaires;
- measurement scales;
- assessment instruments;
- illustrations;
- software or proprietary outputs; and
- substantial excerpts from other publications.
Authors are responsible for determining whether such material is:
- in the public domain;
- available under a compatible open licence;
- covered by a lawful exception or limitation; or
- subject to permission from the rights holder.
Where permission is required, authors must obtain appropriate permission before publication and comply with any required credit wording.
Third-party material not covered by the article's CC BY 4.0 licence must be clearly identified so that readers do not mistakenly assume unrestricted reuse rights.
Figures, Tables, Images and Instruments
Authors must distinguish original material from content reproduced or adapted from another source and must provide appropriate attribution and permissions.
View requirements for reused material
Captions or accompanying notes should indicate where material is:
- original to the submitted article;
- reproduced from another source;
- adapted or modified from another source;
- licensed under separate terms; or
- used with permission from a rights holder.
Permission to use copyright-protected material does not automatically mean that the material becomes CC BY 4.0. The conditions specified by the original rights holder remain applicable unless broader rights were expressly granted.
Copyright Does Not Replace Consent or Privacy Requirements
Permission to reproduce material under copyright law does not replace ethical obligations concerning privacy, confidentiality, or consent.
View privacy and consent distinction
An author may have copyright permission to publish a photograph, image, case description, or clinical record but still require appropriate participant or patient consent if the information is identifiable.
Similarly, participant consent does not by itself establish copyright permission where another party owns the underlying image, instrument, or material.
Authors must satisfy both sets of obligations independently.
Article-Level Copyright Notice
JPMHR aims to identify author copyright ownership and CC BY 4.0 licensing consistently at article level.
View copyright notice principles
A standard article-level notice should communicate, as applicable:
- that copyright is retained by the author or authors;
- the year of publication;
- the applicable CC BY 4.0 licence;
- the licence URL;
- the journal name; and
- any separate rights statement applying to excluded third-party material.
JPMHR seeks consistency between article landing pages, published full-text files, DOI metadata, and other distributed publication metadata.
Copyright and Post-Publication Changes
Author copyright does not prevent JPMHR from taking necessary editorial action to maintain the accuracy and integrity of the scholarly record.
View post-publication rights and responsibilities
Where necessary, JPMHR may publish:
- corrections;
- addenda;
- Expressions of Concern;
- retractions; or
- other appropriate scholarly-record notices.
These actions do not transfer copyright ownership from the author. They form part of the journal's responsibility to maintain an accurate Version of Record.
Substantive published material should not be silently altered merely because authors retain copyright.
Journal Name, Logo and Branding
CC BY 4.0 licensing of scholarly articles does not automatically grant rights to use JPMHR's journal identity, logo, or publisher branding in a misleading manner.
View branding distinction
Users may accurately identify JPMHR as the original publication source when providing attribution.
The journal name, logo, website design, and publisher branding must not be used in a way that falsely suggests:
- official journal publication of a derivative work;
- journal sponsorship;
- journal endorsement;
- publisher endorsement; or
- formal affiliation that does not exist.
Relationship Between Copyright, Licensing and Open Access
JPMHR maintains separate but complementary policies for copyright, licensing, and open access.
View how these policies work together
- Copyright Policy: identifies who owns the scholarly work and what rights authors retain.
- Licensing Policy: defines the reuse permissions granted to the public through CC BY 4.0.
- Open Access Policy: explains that published scholarly content is available immediately and freely to readers without an embargo.
Therefore:
Authors retain copyright + JPMHR publishes under CC BY 4.0 + readers receive immediate open access.
